Note: The Black and White publishes monthly, with two issues being bi-monthly. After two days of "idea sessions" the staff picks their assignment, then has a rough draft due a week later. At this point each editor will look at the current standing of the piece or design, and provide feedback through google document comments. Within the next three weeks until the paper is sent to the printer, the editorial board checks in with staff writers, and continue to leave feedback until the final day. As editor-in-chief I leave feedback on both the print edition and online edition. If a staff writer is working on the design of a page, I will leave comments on the adobe inDesign document, as well as providing inspiration I think may fit with their piece.

Hi, thanks for visiting my portfolio! I’m eighteen, and I’m currently editor-in-chief of my high school’s paper, the Black and White. This is my third year on staff. Throughout my years on newspaper I have held various positions such as, photo editor, print editor, and advertising manager. In the summer of 2018 I attended the Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop.

Besides journalism, I’m interested in political science and law. In no particular order, I like dogs, caramel lattes, and watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP
At the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year the Black & White had decided to switch to a full color newsmagazine. With a new and more expensive paper the need for more funding became present. I decided to step up and lead the process of a new advertising program. Previously the yearbook had sold advertising in the back of the book, and provided a business name on a banner in the gym. However, we had just moved to a new school building, and that concept was vetoed. Starting from scratch, we discussed many options. Finally we decided on a two tier advertising system. Pictured below

Both the yearbook and newspaper utilized this new advertising program. Collectively the journalism program raised over $14,000. After kickstarting the advertising program, I worked as the advertising manager for the rest of the year. I organized contracts, contacted businesses, and arranged ad rotations.

When it came to the 2018-2019 school year, the journalism department decided to add to their program. The paper started to advertise in the print edition, and we added more options for yearbook advertising. Pictured below

I was in charge of setting prices by discussing with business teachers, designing the new contract, and trying the new system. The new advertising has provided businesses with a more individualized experience. Both yearbook endsheets have been sold, as well as many page sponsorships. The paper has had consistent advertising. I take much pride in the creation of a new advertising program at Johnston, that will set the standard for future years.
