Note: The Black and White publishes monthly, with two issues being bi-monthly. After two days of "idea sessions" the staff picks their assignment, then has a rough draft due a week later. At this point each editor will look at the current standing of the piece or design, and provide feedback through google document comments. Within the next three weeks until the paper is sent to the printer, the editorial board checks in with staff writers, and continue to leave feedback until the final day. As editor-in-chief I leave feedback on both the print edition and online edition. If a staff writer is working on the design of a page, I will leave comments on the adobe inDesign document, as well as providing inspiration I think may fit with their piece.

Hi, thanks for visiting my portfolio! I’m eighteen, and I’m currently editor-in-chief of my high school’s paper, the Black and White. This is my third year on staff. Throughout my years on newspaper I have held various positions such as, photo editor, print editor, and advertising manager. In the summer of 2018 I attended the Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop.

Besides journalism, I’m interested in political science and law. In no particular order, I like dogs, caramel lattes, and watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

EDITING

A very crucial part of helping others is helping story board. For each story we encourage writers to create a google document containing any ideas they may have for the story, sources, or designs. I jump on to this documents after the writers have looked for inspiration, and give them my own advice. The example below is in regards to a story about food waste coming from our own lunch room.

This year I decided to have the editorial board start utilizing a team google drive. Members of the board can access documents placed in this drive. This has proven to be very helpful as we are able to make continuous updates on pages and individuals.

Before the school year started I decided to create a staff manual for reference. the Black & White has never had a set manual, and I thought it could be a positive addition to our newsroom. I laid out all expectations, a breakdown of stories, design tips and standardization, etc. Along with the manual at the beginning of the year I provided each member with an AP Style reference guide. The guide included everything from quote formatting to dates and numbers. Below are a couple of pages from the manual.
