DESIGN

This layout was published in the November/December 2018 issue. I went through many different versions and had to try a lot of new tools on Adobe Illustrator to create the figure.

This layout was published in the April 2018 issue. I wrote an in-depth feature about the setup involved in hosting a school walkout. The layout was drawn out before the walkout, but we had to send it to the printers the afternoon of the walkout. I took the photos at the event, and rushed to find the best photos for the layout and we sent it off.

This layout was published in the May 2018 issue. The 2017-18 volume was our first year with a full color newsmagazine. With that came a lot of new design methods, one we explored a lot was using a photo for a background. This photo took many tries and different angles. I think the deadspace of the blanket is perfect for the text, with the infographic very minimalistic over the sleeping student.

This layout is 2 of 4 pages that were published in the September 2018 issue. We themed this issue around consumption, with our in-depth being about lunch food waste. One day after all four lunches we're over, two other editors, a janitor, and I went out back and grabbed all eight bags of garbage. We later dumped out all of the trash to take more photos. I wanted to make this layout impactful by making the photo very dominant, showing how much is thrown away in just one day.

This layout is the last 2 of 4 pages that were published in the September 2018 issue. This photo came after dumping all of the garbage out. The endless sea of garbage is meant to hit home with students, in seeing how much waste is produced in a day.

This layout was published in the October 2018 issue. Since October is Breast cancer awareness month, we wanted to highlight a couple of staff stories. The infographics were made with Adobe illustrator. I wanted to include pink in an obvious yet elegant fashion. One of the biggest struggles our paper has faced is finding a way to design a layout that may not have a photo with it. I think this does justice, and I had a genuine good time creating it.

This layout was published in the November/December 2018 issue. I wasn't originally assigned to design this page, yet after a wisdom tooth removal, it fell into my lap. With our deadline fast approaching I knew I didn't have time for a photo. I wanted to portray the darkness that comes with divorce. I started by making rings, then decided to have to come from the side of the paper.

This layout was published in the March 2018 issue. News has consistently been a hard topic to showcase for us. While the boxes aren't my favorite, I think having the students on top of the line was a nice immersive touch. 'What in the world?' was an idea I had to increase global knowledge for students.

This layout was published in the February 2018 issue. This was hands down one of the most fun pages to make. I had never done a fashion spread, but was very intrigued. I met with the model and an hour long photoshoot quickly turned into multiple hours. We went all around the Des Moines area looking for the best locations. I sketched out 8 different layouts  before sticking with this one. I think it does a good job of balancing photos and words.

This layout was published in the October 2017 issue. This layout was inspired by a photo of someone dunking a bucket of money over their head. I wanted to showcase both ends of the spectrum. There's one student swimming in cash, while one is consumed by the lack of it.

This cover was published in the September 2017 issue. This cover was quite a work in progress. I took the photo of the model early. I tried multiple different adobe applications before finding the perfect mix. The original photo was edited in photoshop which gave me the purple gradient background. The words were added using adobe draw, an iPad app.

This layout was published in the March 2018 issue. Our 2017-18 volume included a playlist next to the index. This quickly became a student favorite. I was listening to music on Spotify one day, and got the inspiration to recreate it. The design is based on the web player of Spotify. It was one of the first design intensive layouts I did, and loved the result.

This cover was published in the September 2018 issue. The photo was taken after dumping out all of the trash from our school lunches. Although the design is simple, I think the subtleness is effective.

This spread was produced at the Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop 2018. I participated in an Advanced Graphic Design course and learned about the importance of design, and how to portray information in a new and creative way. This story was written when I was a junior, and I decided to re-work the layout. I received the excellence in contemporary design award for this layout.

This layout was published in the January/February 2019 issue. The article is about the new popularity of students taking social media cleanses by deleting apps from their phones. The concept of the layout is cleanse so I included things such as a smoothie (juice cleanse), essential oils (air cleansing), and mental cleansing (books), as well as a phone with apps about to be deleted.
